Georgia had always been sort of a "melting pot" of religion. Georgia welcomed large groups of Puritans, Lutherans, and Quakers. The only religious group that was not allowed in Georgia was Catholics. The Church of England was the established church in Colonial Georgia. During the Colonial time period, European Protestants were encouraged to immigrate and Lutherans and Moravians took advantage of the opportunity as well. Georgia served as a land of safety for criminals who were trying to figure out their dept. Georgia was also a land where persecuted Christians and Jews could find refuge and start over in a new land. To this day, Georgia remains a state that cherishes its religious freedom.
